For the General Election in 2009, York will be split into two seats. Andy Chase has been selected as the Greens' Parliamentary candidate for York Central constituency.

Andy Chase is a long-standing Green campaigner in York. Recently, he has been campaigning to prevent the closure of Micklegate Post Office and the loss many sigificant historic local buildings. He was involved with the long-running campaign against "Coppergate II", and came within fifty votes of winning a Council seat in the Micklegate Ward in 2007.

From the results of the 2007 elections (pdf file), the Greens are the main challengers to the incumbent Labour MP Hugh Bayley.

About the Council

Since 2003 the council has been controlled by the Liberal Democrats, with two Green councillors representing Fishergate ward, the first Green councillors in the city.

The City of York has 47 councillors. Elections take place every four years. The last Council elections took place on May 3rd 2007.
