Council to make over 170 homes more energy efficient

The Council has successfully secured two programmes of Government funding to improve the energy efficiency of even more council and privately-owned homes in York.

Over 170 households will benefit from a range of improvements which will include improved insulation and heating systems. This will make them more affordable to heat, better able to retain heat, reduce carbon emissions and improve their comfort and the general health of the home.

60 lower-income households which privately own a colder home – EPC rated D or below – and without gas heating, will be identified for a combination of improvements under the Home Upgrade Grant.

Eligible residents living in rural properties, or in flats with inefficient and expensive heating, and older homes across the city will be targeted for these home improvements, which will include extra insulation.

The exact value of the funding for this project will be known when eligible residents in suitable types of homes have been identified and the homes have been surveyed.

£2 million additional funding will also be used to upgrade some 113 council homes, making them more energy efficient and affordable to run. This will be funded by £1m from Government and the rest will be match-funded by the Council.

Eligible residents of council homes will be identified to benefit from a combination of new or upgraded insulation works and the installation of renewable heating systems. These homes will include bungalows, family houses with uninsulated ginnels running through them, and the apartments being upgraded at Bell Farm. All works will be complete by March 2025.

Councillor Denise Craghill, Executive Member for Housing and Safer Communities, said: “Our programme to improve council and private homes will be accelerated by this very welcome funding.

“We are already identifying those homes where current and future residents could benefit from greater energy efficiency, affordability and comfort, and where carbon emissions could be reduced.”
