Parliament is debating the issue of pavement. This is a huge problem, especially for disabled people and parents. We have asked York’s MPs to speak in the debate and call for a ban on pavement parking (except where explicitly allowed).
Open letter to York’s MPs:
Dear Julian / Rachael,
Tomorrow, March 7, Liz Twist is organising a debate in Parliament on pavement parking.
Pavement parking is a serious problem right across York. It is a particular problem for the most vulnerable users; whether this be wheel chairs forced into the road by the narrow gap, or parents with buggies having to push vulnerable children out into the road to pass badly parked cars. Many parents are less likely to let their children walk to school because of the dangers created by cars blocking the pavements (often close to schools).
Most of the highway is already devoted to cars, with often narrow pavements left for pedestrians. London has banned pavement parking (except where explicitly allowed) for many years, and Scotland has recently implemented a similar ban.
In Autumn 2020 the government held a consultation on pavement parking, but the results have still not been published over three years later.
Please will you attend tomorrow’s debate and call for the results of the consultation to be published, and for a ban on pavement parking (except where explicitly allowed).
