At the Executive Member for Transport Decision Session on Tues May 13th Green Party activist Michael Kearney will be pressing for Cllr Ravilious to confirm the proposed R66 Wellington St residents parking scheme, over-ruling the 13 objections to the scheme.
The recent planning application for over 200 new homes on the nearby Barbican site with less than 70 parking spaces has further fuelled concern of residents. “It’s clear unrestricted on-street parking within 200 yards of the site cannot be left any longer.” said Mike. “Even before that, as soon as construction starts, residents know there will be workers cars and vans adding to the parking pressure in the area.”
The Green Party submitted a petition from the area in April 2019 which led to a council survey in January 2024, with a majority of those responding being in favour of a scheme (72 for and 44 against)
Former ward councillor Andy D’Agorne has welcomed the council motion passed last September calling for the whole respark process to be streamlined to enable a quicker response to be delivered to requests to tackle parking problems.
The party says that despite the motion being passed 8 months ago, this report demonstrates officers clinging to outdated processes that don’t serve the needs of residents, with a ‘do nothing’ recommendation despite having now completed the statutory consultation process. The officers alternative (despite 24 written responses to the statutory consultation) is to suggest further prevarication and waste of council funds to repeat the whole process!!
“We strongly urged the Executive Member to approve the order which has completed the statutory process and implement the proposed residents parking scheme for the area without any further delay. Such action would be entirely in keeping with the express wishes of Council to move towards a more effective process and completely in line with the adopted Transport Strategy for York which seeks to reduce regular driving into the centre of York for leisure or work purposes.”
