York stuck on bottom rung of Active travel capability fund rating

What about Active Travel? Surely there must be progress there with Mayor Skaith at last appointing an Active Travel Commissioner and committing funds to shift York and North Yorkshire off the bottom rung of the performance ladder?

Sadly not, as yet again we score 1 out of 4, locked in to determine our funding now until 2029.  Three years ago when York’s capability score was set at 1 this made headline news (York Press). However failure to make any progress (despite all the work on a transport strategy) evidently is just ‘par for the course’ with our last Active Travel England capital funding awarded in 2023 of £1,000,000 for Jubilee Terrace riverside path upgrade still sat depreciating in council coffers.

Will we see this being spent on delivery in 2026? At present progress there’s no chance of reversing the continuing decline in cycling in York, never mind the 100% increase by 2030 that’s in our climate change targets
