Green campaigner, Henry Stevens, has called on York and North Yorkshire Mayor, David Skaith, to make sure that if he brings in a Tourist Tax the new funding (raised from a small levy on overnight visitors to York) will be spent on improving our city centre and nearby neighbourhoods by funding things such as more bins and better public toilets.
He says “Residents are reporting rising issues of litter in their communities despite the hundreds of wonderful volunteer litter pickers across the city. And everyone agrees that the standard of our public toilets leaves a lot to be desired. A tourist tax is an opportunity to do something about the impact York’s high number of tourists have on our beautiful city – for residents and visitors alike. It is not intended for reinvestment in tourism marketing as the mayor previously suggested.”
