Hannah Spencer, Green MP for Gorton and Denton, has called on the government to tax “every penny of the huge windfall profits oil and gas giants have made since the start of the illegal war on Iran.” Hannah made the call after the Regulator Ofgem, announced the new energy price cap which will see a 13% increase in a typical household’s energy bills from the start of July. She explained: “Today’s price cap announcement will leave so many people even more stressed out and worried about affording their energy bills. Millions of people are already struggling to make ends meet, and it is unacceptable that energy costs continue to shoot up whilst BP’s profits double.”
Green Party leader Zack Polanski challenged Labour back in April to freeze energy bills beyond July when the current price cap ends. In a major speech on the economy he argued that doing nothing would be unacceptable for the millions of people already struggling with the cost of living. His economic vision for turning round ‘Rip Off Britain’ includes re-nationalising water, and decoupling electricity prices from the cost of gas.
