Guildhall Green campaigner, Ben Ffrench has responded to comments from Lib Dem leader, Nigel Ayre, saying that the May 27 elections could bring a ‘revolution’ of new Green councillors. He said:
“Nigel Ayre (Comment May 21st) is right that in the three years since Labour took control of City of York Council, Labour has failed to deliver on their promises of freezing council tax, universal free school meals and cheaper, warmer homes.
With Labour in York now running literally every level of government, residents are entitled to ask what those promises have actually delivered.
The lesson for York of the last few years is not that we should simply cycle around a Labour, Lib Dem and Conservative Punch and Judy show. It is that the city needs a politics with humility, justice and far more collaboration between leaders and communities before decisions are made.
York needs more warm and affordable homes, regular, reliable bus services, safer streets, serious climate action and essential local services people can rely on. Greens in the room on our council can be the difference in this fight.
Following the outstanding successes for the Greens around our region, we are in contention for leadership in Sheffield, Bradford and Huddersfield. We’ve had further gains across Leeds and Wakefield, as Yorkshire sees the benefit of going Green. Nationally, we now run Norwich, Hastings and Hackney in London among other places.
It’s clear that May 2027 will see a revolution of new Green councillors in York to bring fresh politics to the running of the city with a strong track record from the hundreds of new Green councillors elected this year.”
