Bishopthorpe Green campaigner, Joe Nasson has been at the forefront of a successful campaign to prevent the Parish Council selling off ‘Field 84’, a much-valued local amenity green space described by Joe as “a cherished nature haven, painstakingly nurtured by local residents to support a rich tapestry of biodiversity.”
The petition against the sale started by Joe achieved 881 signatures and, alongside a determined campaign by Joe and local residents and conservation experts, led to the parish council launching a public consultation on the sale.
In early May, before the consultation reached its conclusions the business bidding to purchase the field withdrew its offer which has been hailed as a victory by Joe and local campaigners. Joe said “Field 84 is a home to rare wildflowers and a variety of wildlife that thrive here due to the tireless efforts of our community members. It is a sanctuary for nature lovers and families who value the green space. It should remain publicly owned and accessible for everyone to enjoy. Now that the purchase offer has been withdrawn I will be pursuing my application to designate the area as a Protected Village Green Space and working with local volunteers to maintain the field for its long-term conservation.”
