Greens oppose fracking nationwide

15 August 2013

Greens across the UK have spoken out against fracking - the process of hydralic fracturing used to release natural gas from shale rock. Green Party members including leader Natalie Bennett and Green MP Caroline Lucas have joined the protest camp against the exploratory drilling at Balcombe in West Sussex.

Caroline Lucas said: "The Government should listen, not least because there is a bigger picture here, alongside the genuine and valid concerns of local communities.  It has been estimated that between 60 and 80% of existing fossil fuel reserves must remain in the ground if we are to have any chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change.  Some of the UK’s leading climate scientists have warned that the widespread use of shale gas is quite simply incompatible with the Government’s international commitments to keep global warming below two degrees."

Exploration licenses have been issued for land immediately to the west of York. Green Party Councillor Andy D'Agorne said: "The exploration in Balcombe is more than just for shale gas - it is testing the water for public opposition to fracking. If we care about building a sustainable future we must oppose fracking everywhere.

"Fracking is the wrong solution to our energy needs – dirty, risky and adding to climate change. Extracting oil and shale gas from beneath York could risk our local environment, our water supplies and even our heritage. With over 2,000 listed buildings, we have a lot to lose even from minor earth tremors that could be triggered by the process. York must be a frack free zone!"

Despite support for fracking being around 44%, compared to onshore wind at around 66%, the Green Party is the only major UK party to oppose the technology.
