Green councillor fights for traffic cuts

6 May 2014

Speaking at today’s Cabinet meeting, Councillor D'Agorne said “The Green Party supports the proposed independent cross party Congestion Commission being set up following the bungled Lendal Bridge trial.”

“The bridge’s closure clearly had benefits, but the problems with its implementation have been exploited for political gain,” he added. “Councillors of all parties must now move on to seriously evaluate all options to cut traffic. We need to create a pedestrian and cycle friendly city centre environment, served by frequent clean and reliable public transport.”

“There are over one hundred premature deaths in York a year because of illegal levels of air pollution,” said Councillor D’Agorne. “We must now critically examine the evidence, including experiences from elsewhere in the UK and Europe and start to develop effective solutions.” As one example, he called on the council to follow towns like Huddersfield, where a free shuttle bus helps residents get around the centre without needing their cars.
