Fracking campaign to continue as Greens aquitted

24 April 2014

Last week, Caroline Lucas MP and four co-defendants were cleared of obstructing the public highway and failing to comply with other police conditions during anti-fracking protests in Balcombe, West Sussex.

"It’s fracking that has the case to answer, not Caroline and her companions, who were exercising their right to peaceful protest," said  Councillor Taylor.

Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) is the process of pumping water and chemicals underground at high pressure to force gas from layers of rock. Serious concerns have been raised about the toxic nature of the chemicals used, links with contamination of water supplies, and broader adverse effects on wildlife and the environment.

"As well as all the environmental damage, the use of fracking will also mean the UK missing its climate targets. It will lead to reduced funding for the development of clean renewable power. Even fracking pioneer Cuadrilla, which is the energy company at the centre of the Balcombe protests, has said it will have minimal effect on energy prices," added Councillor Taylor.

Cuadrilla is among several companies applying for licences for shale gas exploration (using fracking techniques to assess the potential of rocks to yield up commercial quantities of gas) across the UK. Licences have already been granted for large areas of North Yorkshire, including part of York (see a map of licensed areas, courtesy of the Northern Echo).

On  Tuesday 13 May, starting at 6:30pm at the Priory Street Centre, Frack Free York are screening Gasland II. The film, sequel to the critically-acclaimed Gasland, shows how the stakes have been raised on all sides in one of the most important environmental issues facing our nation today.
