Councillor welcomes Post Office expansion works

14 August 2014

Councillor Andy D'Agorne has welcomed the news that the Post Office on Broadway is to be upgraded into a 'main-style' branch. The change will mean longer opening hours and an extra serving position.

Since the closure of the Fulford and Fishergate Post Offices in 2009 this post office has been heavily used.

However Cllr D'Agorne has written to the post office seeking reassurance that as part of the work, the broken forecourt will be repaired and the access ramp brought up to disabled access standards. The notification for the work only mentions under 'accessibility works' that 'there will be a dual height writing desk, a low level serving counter and a hearing loop'.

Cllr D'Agorne said "When the other local branches closed, the poor access was noted and we were promised a new accessible entrance but we are still waiting. There seems little point in introducing disabled facilities inside the shop without upgrading the entrance."

The forecourt to the shops which provided parking is unadopted and has been a longstanding issue of concern over the years. In 2010 Cllr D'Agorne helped negotiate a solution to ongoing parking problems between the Council, shopowners and residents' group BAGNARA, but the status of the land has continued to cause problems with maintenance. "This is an opportunity for the remaining damaged section in front of the Post office to be brought up to a safe condition" said Cllr D'Agorne.

UPDATE: The Post Office has told us that level access will be provided by replacing the shop front and fitting a legally-compliant automatic door. At the same time, the forecourt directly outside the Post Office will be resurfaced. This means the PO will be closed from 9th to 22nd September to allow these works to happen. If you are elderly or disabled and have trouble getting to another branch during this period, York Wheels (01904 630080) might be able to help.
