Greens celebrate riverbank victory

31 October 2014

The planning application to fence off a popular area of riverbank near the Millennium Bridge has been withdrawn following hundreds of objections. York Motor Yacht Club applied for permission to provide 14 extra moorings surrounded by a 2-metre high fence. A protest against the plan on 19 October attracted around two hundred local residents. City of York Council had already reversed an earlier announcement that it intended to dispose of the public open space for the exclusive use of members of the club.

Andy D'Agorne, Green councillor for Fishergate ward which includes the threatened site, said “This is a victory for people power, very much supported by The Press who helped alert residents on both sides of the river to the plan. Without this outcry, the council would have quietly handed over public land to a private club and ruined the views from Millennium Bridge and the South Bank side of the river.”

Cllr D’Agorne is still pressing the council property services department for information about the terms of the proposed deal and why it got so far through the process without any local consultation or involvement of ward councillors in the area. “This is symptomatic of the culture of secrecy that Greens want to see an end to,” he added.
