"Fat cats" draw attention to TTIP protest

York Green Party activists joined with members of York People's Assembly, York Defend the NHS and Just York as part of a national Day of Action organised by the World Development Movement.

The protest against the TTIP (the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) took place in King's Square on Saturday 12 July. The TTIP is a major new trade deal being negotiated in secret between the European Union and the United States. It is being presented as a free trade deal to reduce tariff barriers and create jobs. Denise Craghill, Chair of York Green Party, said, "In fact barriers to trade in goods between the EU and the US are already very low. 80% of the deal is about removing 'non-tariff barriers' which means pushing our hard-won standards of environmental, consumer and employment protection down to rock bottom."

"A close look at the figures provided by the European Commission shows that the likely level of job creation is very low across Europe and hard to predict," she added. "Whilst some sectors will gain others will lose out from increased competition and the driving of employment standards to the bottom will mean more and more low quality jobs with no employment protection. Claims that thousands of jobs will be created are pure fiction."

The TTIP threatens our legal protections, our public services and our democracy itself. The Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) clause in the agreement will enable multi-national corporations to sue governments when they believe that a law impedes their ability to make profit, so for example under TTIP a moratorium on fracking or a ban on pesticides that harm bees could be challenged via a secretive and unaccountable court consisting of corporate lawyers. The agreement also threatens to set in stone the current privatisation our National Health Service, unless an exemption for the NHS can be included.

Green response to European Commission consultation on TTIP

This is a corporate take over being negotiated secretly (what we do know is leaked or revealed under pressure, detailed negotiations are secret) - read about it - and complain! The decision on TTIP will be taken by the EU Council of Ministers (including our Government) and the European Parliament, which has the right to veto the deal, but won't until the 'main' parties start to feel the pressure!
