York MP to step down in May

5 December 2014

Hugh Bayley has served as York's MP since being elected in 1992, serving throughout the New Labour era. He announced his decision to stand down this morning, saying that after 22 years he wanted to put his family first.

The Green Party candidate for York Central, Jonathan Tyler, came to know Hugh Bayley well during his tenure. He said:

"Hugh has been a great constituency MP, well respected and very active within the city. I've always found him to be open, honest and approachable. Before being elected he was a researcher at the University in York – he was someone who had a base and a life here and was very much part of the city. He was the kind of MP York deserved, not someone parachuted in by central office.

"Speaking as a railwayman, I think he's been a stalwart defender of the interests of rail travellers in York and has worked hard to retain the East Coast rail franchise HQ in York. But it was a great disappointment that the Labour government under which he loyally served failed to reverse privatisation.

"We face new challenges now, and York needs a green agenda. Hugh has talked the talk on climate change but has largely toed the party line. His support for fracking has not gone unnoticed. During the years I was chair of the York Environment Forum he kept well away. We face serious changes, not just in tackling climate change but in bringing back sustainable manufacturing and farming to York.

"York can live better within its natural limits – we can protect our heritage and green spaces, bringing green jobs and reducing our footprint on the planet. I commend much that Hugh has done, but by stepping down he has given us a better chance to face these challenges."

Jonathan Tyler was a founding member of the Green Party in 1976 and has lived in York for 27 years. More information about him can be found at http://york.greenparty.org.uk/people/jonathan-tyler.html
