Decision on YorSpace Bid Postponed

19 March 2015

City of York Council Leader Daffyd Williams has decided to defer the decision on the disposal of Oliver House to Cabinet after listening to the arguments for YorSpace's bid. During the decision session at West Offices, Cllr Williams heard support statements from York Green Candidate for Micklegate, Mark Havercroft, YorSpace's Susanna Bird and James Newton, and local activist Pete Kilbane.

In a surprise move, Conservative councillor Paul Healey threatened to side with the Greens should the Council Leader's decision be called in. Cllr Williams then politely told him that he hadn't said what his decision was yet!

After listening to arguments in favour of the highest bid from a York Council Officer, Dafydd Williams then took the decision to defer to Cabinet.

"Although not an unqualified 'Yes', this has to be seen as a victory for YorSpace's bid to have a wider discussion on York's housing needs" said Green Party Candidate, Mark Havercroft. "The range of arguments and evidence for the need for this kind of housing has been noted by Cllr Williams and I thanked him for his fairness".

Taking a deep breath, YorSpace's Susannah Bird said "So the work continues. We'll take the weekend off, have a rest, and get back to pushing our case for fairness in housing in York".

So, the YorSpace story continues. Watch this Space!
