Fire and Rescue Service Cuts Could Risk Safety, Warns York Greens Group Leader

23 June 2015

A leading councillor has expressed concerns about public safety if North Yorkshire Fire Authority vote through proposed major changes to the County’s fire and rescue services at a meeting this week in order to save an estimated £1.3m.

York's Group Leader for the Green Party, Andy D’Agorne, will be in attendance as one of four York councillors now sitting as members of the county’s Fire Authority.

Cllr D’Agorne said. “There is still more detail required, but there is widespread concern among dedicated fire crews that they could be faced with greater risk to their own lives in order to try to save the lives of others if these changes go ahead."

Among the proposals under consideration as the authority look to make savings amidst further austerity measures, are a reduced number of full time crew members and an increased reliance on non-stationed 'retained crew members' who take at least 5 minutes to reach the station after an emergency alert has been received.

“We are dealing with an essential and fundamental public service in what is the largest county in England,” added D’Agorne. “We should not support changes unless we are 100% convinced that they will not endanger the lives of our courageous service men and women or indeed, increase the risks for the public, whom every day rely on our fire and rescue teams.”

The meeting is to be held at the Fire and Rescue Service Training Centre in Easingwold at 10am on Wednesday 24th June. Members of the North Yorkshire Fire Brigades Union are also expected to be present, demonstrating against these proposed cuts and changes to the service.
