Green Candidate welcomes 'overdue' Northern transport strategy

20 March 2015

Green Party York Central candidate Jonathan Tyler has welcomed the Government announcement about a transport strategy for the north of England, calling it "long overdue". He also expressed concerns at the lack of funding.

Jonathan said: "Good public transport connections are vital for the economic and social life of the regions. A network-wide strategy like this is needed, and in fact long overdue, if we are to have the economic and environmental benefits of railways."

However, Jonathan notes that no funding commitment has been announced alongside the strategy. "Unfortunately, this appears largely designed to grab pre-election headlines. The Green Party would reassert the public interest by renationalising our railway, ending the fragmented system we have today. More coherent planning would then enable northern England to make better use of the existing system and to improve it incrementally."

Jonathan, who is an experienced railwayman and a specialist in timetable planning, continued: "Switzerland has shown how an integrated timetable plan, simple fares and carefully-targeted spending on critical enhancements delivers a network that every citizen can easily use and that boosts economic activity. The North East, Yorkshire and Humberside and the North West could achieve a similar network, starting now, if the Government dropped its obsession with mega-projects, forced Network Rail and the rail franchisees to collaborate for the common good and gave northern local government the powers and funding to get on with the job".

Jonathan Tyler is the Green Party candidate for the York Central Constituency. He joined British Rail as a Traffic Apprentice in 1962 and now runs a consultancy in York specialising in strategic timetable planning.
