Greens call for alternative to ‘Congestion Commission’

Following the announcement by new Transport Executive member Ian Gillies that the new administration at City of York Council is to ditch the proposed ‘Congestion Commission’, Green Group leader Cllr Andy D’Agorne has called for a local media led debate and a ‘People’s Commission’ to find solutions to the growing congestion and air pollution in York.

Cllr D’Agorne said: “In a week when plans are recommended for approval that include 155 parking spaces for new housing on the Barbican site and 308 spaces on the Terry’s site, York needs to to move on from failed solutions and get behind a new traffic reduction strategy to keep York moving”.

While the Greens had supported the proposal for an independently chaired ‘Congestion Commission’, they opposed the proposed chair, whose background was major bridge and tunnel project management.

Greens call on new Council to take action on air pollution

Cllr D'Agorne welcomed the recognition by Cllr Gillies that York has a serious problem with traffic and bad air quality and urged him not to sweep the problem under the carpet simply because the proposed 'Congestion Commission' has become a political football.

Cllr D'Agorne said: "It is estimated that at least 100 people die prematurely in York each year as a result of air pollution, whilst workers and businesses struggle daily with the delays . The problem isn't going to go away by ignoring the issue. We need an approach which combines expert advice on what is possible with genuine involvement by residents".

"We will be happy to see something that isn't called a Congestion Commission and happy if it cost less, as long as something significant happens - a few piecemeal measures here and there and a few more electric charging points won't be enough".

The Greens say their proposal would make the most of resources we have here in York, whilst aiming for a 'shared understanding of the issue combined with inspiration as to what is possible and what has been done elsewhere.'

Cllr D'Agorne's stage-by-stage proposal for how the People's Commission would run is available here.
