Time to act on climate change

3 November 2015

York Green Councillors hold climate change messages

The crucial COP21 Paris climate talks are fast approaching and York Green Party is urging people to get involved. You can read more about the talks and why public pressure is so important on the Campaign Against Climate Change website here. With climate change high on the news agenda, there are a number of events and marches being held to add to the pressure for a comprehensive deal on tackling climate change:

Climate Conversation - Visions of a Low-Carbon York

Hudson Room, Council offices on Station Rise.
Friday 6th November, 12.15pm.

What would a sustainable and climate-smart York look like in the future? What challenges will the city face under a changed climate? How can we ensure that York is resilient and continues to thrive? Come along to hear about what’s already happening in York, some suggestions for future directions – and be part of the solution!

From 1pm there will be a workshop for participants to express their own ideas in pictures, words or virtual media. The session will be led by Kate Lock of York Environment Forum and Jacqui Warren, Sustainability Officer, City of York Council.

Suggestions from this event will inform a refreshed Vision for York 2030 for York Environment Forum.

Stopping Climate Change: The Road to Paris and Beyond...

Friends' Meeting House, Friargate.
Tuesday 10th November, 7.30pm.

A meeting organised by York People's Assembly Against Austerity to discuss the politics of climate change, and how we use the remaining time to stop it before it's too late. The speakers so far confirmed are Lewis Neilson from the Campaign Against Climate Change, and Dave Merrett from York TUC.

York Coach to People's March for the Climate

Leeman Road Coach Stop.
Sunday 29th November, 7am.

York People's Assembly are also running coaches to the People's March for the Climate in York. You can buy tickets here.

There will be a Green Party Bloc on the march. Further details here or on the Facebook event page here.

Paris March

Saturday 12th December.

Those who can may also be interested in attending the demonstration in Paris to mark the end of the talks. The idea is to make sure that people, not governments, have the final word on the negotiations and, whatever happens, the climate movement emerges stronger than ever before. Further details about the demonstration and how to get there can be found on the Time to Act website here.

What we are doing locally

York Green Party is doing its bit to tackle climate change on a local level. York's Green Councillors recently had success with an amendment at York's full Council meeting securing a review of council investments with a view to excluding companies involved in producing fossil fuels. You can read more about it here. They have also been pushing for the Council to rule out any fracking in the York area. You can read more about the Green Party's view on the dangers of fracking here.
