York Green Party joins anti-fracking protest

13 January 2015

On Friday (9th January) York Green Party members joined other anti-fracking campaigners outside the Environment Agency offices at Clifton Moor. The protest was arranged after a Freedom of Information request revealed that Third Energy UK Gas Ltd., a company with plans to frack a test well in Kirby Misperton, Ryedale, were meeting with agency officials.

The discussion was specifically related to Third Energy's plans to use Halliburton as the drilling contractor for the project. Halliburton was involved in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and had to pay out $1bn to settle claims as a result, also admitting to destroying evidence in the aftermath of the spill. Halliburton has also been involved in other controversial incidents, including a fire at a site it was working at in Ohio which resulted in a chemical spill into a river.

The Green Party is strongly against fracking, in direct contrast to David Cameron's so-called "greenest government ever", who have offered tax breaks to fracking companies in a bid to accelerate the growth of the industry. Fracking will accelerate climate change, worsen our dependency on fossil fuels, and is a dangerous and inefficient way of producing energy. Investing in clean energy sources, insulation and efficient heating will provide the country with the energy we need while producing more jobs and helping us to avert catastrophic climate change.
