York Greens launch People's Congestion Commission

22 September 2015

Green Party Councillor Andy D'Agorne has criticized Executive member for Transport, Cllr Ian Gillies, for his remarks at a recent scrutiny meeting, saying that the Tories have 'no solutions' for congestion in York.

Cllr Gillies told the meeting that he didn’t propose to repeat the long running 'Traffic Congestion Scrutiny' of five years ago and could see no point in a citywide consultation on the issue.

In response, the Greens have announced a ‘People’s Congestion Commission' in which all residents and businesses of York will be invited to come up with their own innovative solutions to tackle the growing concerns of congestion and resultant air pollution.

Poor air quality in the City Centre is a growing concern among health experts, with levels regularly exceeding European Union limits

The PCC is launched today, coinciding with World Car Free Day - a day in which towns and cities across Europe promote awareness of car free ways of travelling in urban areas.

Members will be asking residents for their solutions to congestion and inviting them to a meeting in October which will include a talk by Professor of Sustainable Development at University of York's Stockholm Environment Institute, John Whitelegg.

Prof Whittlegg specialises in sustainable transport systems, and has an extensive knowledge of transport and the environment having written numerous books and papers on the subject over an academic career that spans over more than three decades.

The meeting on 20th October at the Priory Centre will be the first of a number of meetings and events to highlight actions to cut traffic and tackle air pollution in York.

Cllr D'Agorne said "We do not claim to have all the answers, but the council has a responsibility to residents to tackle dangerous pollution levels and we want local people to share their expertise and ideas for the future of our city. Other local groups are welcome to bring forward their ideas too for the council to take seriously and perhaps model."
