York Greens welcome launch of UnJam York

20 December 2015

UnJam York evolved from the “People’s Congestion Commission” set up by the York Green Party after the Council scrapped its plans for a congestion commission to examine traffic problems in the city. International transport expert Professor John Whitelegg spoke at the People’s Commission meeting in October and galvanised the crowded meeting into action.

It was important to us that the campaign to sort out York’s transport mess involves everyone regardless of their politics and their preferred way of moving around the city,” says Green Councillor Andy D’Agorne. That’s why we were so delighted with the success of our October meeting, and very excited that UnJam York has been set up as a result.”

UnJam York will draw attention to York’s high levels of air pollution and heavily congested roads, which lead to increased ill health and premature deaths. It aims to involve local people in finding workable solutions for these problems.

Congestion is a massive problem for York, says Cllr D’Agorne. We’d urge as many people as possible to get involved in UnJam York and help create a sustainable future for transport in the city. This is an inspiring and democratic way for people to come up with creative solutions and then put pressure on the council to deliver.”

Anyone is welcome to join UnJam York. Details for upcoming events will be posted on UnJam’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/UnJamYork) and on Twitter (@UnJamYork), as well as their website, www.unjamyork.org.uk
