Press release: Greens propose support for local democracy and economy

23 March 2016

York Council’s Green Group motion to Council tomorrow asks fellow council members to back local democracy and the York economy.

Green Group leader Andy D’Agorne said “The Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP) threatens democracy at all levels.  There has been no scrutiny or consultation with City of York Council or other local government representatives and this trade deal could have massive impacts on local democracy, effectively hampering our ability to make decisions in the best interests of our citizens. Evidence from around the world shows how the costs of defending democratically made decisions have had the effect of preventing neighbouring democracies from taking similar decisions.  TTIP negotiations have been taking place in secret and it’s time its threat to local democracy was exposed”

Ginnie Shaw, a local activist and Green, who is speaking in support of the motion, said “there is huge grass-roots support for this motion from community groups across the city.  The threat posed by TTIP to employment rights, food standards and the environment cannot be understated. York’s status as a Fairtrade City will be affected and our aspiration to become a One World City compromised.  We have to take a stand now to protect hard won campaigns and for the sake of future generations”.

There will be a lobby of councillors before they enter the Guildhall from 5.30pm attended by community activists from a wide range of York’s trade justice, environmental and political groupings.
