Clean Air Zone petition of 600 signatories to be presented to CYC this Monday

4 August 2017

York Green Party's petition for a Clean Air Zone for York will be presented to Cllr Waller (responsibility for Environment) at the Decision Session this Monday, 7th August, 5:30pm.

Our Clean Air Zone petition was in fact presented to the council on National Clean Air Day, 15th June 2017 addressed to both Sustainable Transport Manager Andrew Bradley and Environment Protection Manager Mike Southcombe - with a very significant total of over 600 signatures.

Cllr Lars Kramm, activists Danni Makin & Rosie Baker, Green Group Leader Andy D'Agorne, outside CYC with the very well-supported petition on National Clean Air Day 2017.

Due to what seems like some loss of translation or the loss of the petition, we can't work out which, unfortunately we have had no official recognition of the petition to date. York has been monitoring the dangerous levels of air pollution caused by traffic for nearly 20 years. Although there are signs of improvement there are still over 100 people a year dying early because of the pollution and more children suffer asthma and have restricted lung development. Of the UK’s 43 air quality zones, 38 (including York) have failed to meet Nitrogen Dioxide limits stipulated by the EU and are unlikely to do so before 2020. The York Green Party is therefore calling, again, for more urgent action to implement the Air Quality Action Plan immediately, with a ‘clean air zone’ for the city centre which would include priorities such as:

1. Targeted enforcement action against drivers parked with their engines running

2. Reducing the number of diesel vehicles

3. Behavioural change away from private car use

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this campaign so far.
