The trial of Hajar Mansoor Hassan, Nazar Alwadaei and Mahmood Marzooq

21 September 2017

Bahrain Hajar Mansoor Hassan, Nazar Alwadaei and Mahmood Marzooq have recently faced a travesty of a trial in Bahrain in another clear attempt to intimidate Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, the director of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Development (BIRD).  BIRD is a UK based group focused on advocacy, education and awareness and the calls for democracy and human rights in Bahrain, and has been a strong critic of the Bahraini government.

This is not the first attempt to intimidate Mr Alwadaei by arresting his family, and these actions have rightly been condemned by human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch as well as by some governments, including the Danish government. Hajar Mansoor Hassan, Nazar Alwadaei and Mahmood Marzooq have been tortured whilst in prison, and the charges are based on coerced confessions.

I am writing to you as Co-Chair of York Green Party, following a motion at our meeting on 20 September to request that you ask the UK government to press the Bahraini government to release Hajar Mansoor Hassan, Nazar Alwadaei and Mahmood Marzooq as a matter of urgency, and to drop the clearly trumped up chages, and to condemn the use of torture.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Tom Franklin

Co-chair York Green Party

CC: Mr Alwadaei, BIRD

The motion passed by York Green Party 20 September 2017

York Green Party is extremely concerned at the harassment of the family of Sayed Ahmed AlWadaei, director of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Development (BIRD).  In order to try to supress Mr Al Wadaei several members of his family, Hajar Mansoor Hassan, Nazar Alwadaei and Mahmood Marzooq , have been arrested and imprisoned on trumped up charges in Bahrain.  This has already been condemned by many human rights organisations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch and several governments including Denmark.

York Green Party will write to both York’s MPs requesting them to write to appropriate government ministers asking them to support the family of Sayed Ahmed AlWadaei and condemn the torture and unfair trial of Hajar Mansoor Hassan, Nazar Alwadaei and Mahmood Marzooq, and that York Green Party will write to Sayed Ahmed AlWadaei to express support.
